The One with the Las Vegas bus rant

The bus was jam-packed - squashed in like sardines packed - but that didn’t stop the driver from picking up more passengers.

One of them? A security guard - you could tell from her uniform. She got on, stood gripping a rail for a while, and then…

The rant began.

Why she should have a seat. (She's been at work all day!)

Why someone should move for her. (Her back hurts!)

Why this is unacceptable. (Meanwhile, I’d just walked the outlets for hours and really needed that seat too!)

She was grouchy. Loud. Frustrated.

Paul and I were doing everything we could to avoid eye contact. Because once we look at each other, we’re done. The tension. The absurdity. The effort to hold in the giggles.

Then - BOOM. The first snort of laughter escaped. That was it. Our stomachs ached from holding it in when we got off the bus.

What this rant has to do with business

The security guard probably would have been offered a seat… if she had asked.

But instead, she demanded it. She assumed someone else should fix her problem. She expected people to guess what she needed.

In business? That never works.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

✨ Want engagement? Start a conversation - don’t just expect people to comment.

✨ Want more sales? Make it easy for people to buy - don’t assume they’ll figure it out.

✨ Want support? Ask clearly - people can’t read your mind.

Entitlement repels connection. Clear communication invites it.

If you’re waiting for people to “simply know” what you need - you’ll be stuck standing.

What to do instead

Be direct. Be clear. Be human.

Start the conversation. Ask the question. Make the offer obvious.
